Lyari Building Collapse Court Sends SBCA Officials Owners to Jail
The court rejected the request for extended remand and instead sent the accused to jail on judicial remand
KARACHI At least 27 people have died following the collapse of a five-storey residential building in the Baghdadi area of Lyari, Karachi. Authorities have launched a criminal investigation, with police arresting more than 10 individuals, including senior officials from the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA), reported on Thursday.
In a court appearance at the Judicial Magistrate-South’s court today, 10 accused individuals—including the two building owners—were produced before the judge. The investigation officer requested an extension in the physical remand of the suspects, stating that the official building record had not yet been received.
However, the defense counsel opposed the prosecution’s request, arguing that the section officer was responsible for providing the necessary documents. “The investigating officer can obtain the record directly from the relevant department,” the lawyer said
Among the detained are seven SBCA officers and multiple flat owners from the collapsed structure. Authorities have stated that the investigation is ongoing, with more arrests likely as the probe continues.
