Madame Web describes the upcoming Marvel movie featuring Dakota Johnson as a "embarrassing mess"

First impressions of the latest Marvel adaption Madame Web, starring Sydney Sweeney and Dakota Johnson, have been harsh.

The movie was not extensively shown for reviewers before to its February 14 release; the first advance reviews didn’t come in until this week, during the film’s premiere.

Critics have not been kind to the film, though; one critic called it a “embarrassing mess.”

Madame Web is set in the same universe as the two Tom Hardy-starring Venom movies and the 2021 Jared Leto failure Morbius.

Here is a summary of some of the responses to the movie from the few people who have seen it, as The Independent’s review will not be available until after its release.

Cris Parker, a YouTuber, stated: “#MadameWeb is an embarrassing mess.” It’s arguably the worst comic book movie I’ve ever seen, a waste of talented talents. crappy editing, terrible dialogue, and an overall ridiculous structure. I waited there, perplexed, while each scene was approved by someone. Memes will make it worthwhile.

He did commend Scott’s acting, the “early 2000s aesthetic,” and Johnson’s sense of humor.

Madame Web was characterized as “a clunky, poorly-written, messy, and sloppy movie packed with some mediocre editing and performances” by The Hollywood Handle. “Even though it had solid cinematography and an interesting concept, it couldn’t be saved due to its terrible execution,” the reviewer continued in a tweet.

@bookblerd, a writer and critic, stated: “I was, regrettably, not successfully entertained. #MadameWeb is a string of blunders and lost chances, and not just for apparent reasons.

YouTuber @cocognz commented, “#MadameWeb is yet another disappointing entry in the Sony Universe.” “While Dakota Johnson is exceptional, the remaining members of the cast fall short in my opinion.

“It’s not as horrible as I thought it would be, but it regrettably falls short of being a good film.”

The unfavorable reactions are a part of a trend that many have labeled “superhero fatigue,” which is broader disenchantment with the direction superhero movies are taking.

Films such as Shazam! Fury of the Gods, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and The Marvels have all failed at the box office in just the past year, raising the possibility that the genre’s dominance in terms of box office revenue may be eroding.

Madame Web opens in theaters on February 14.
