Trump Slams Mamdani After Surprise NY Win

Zohran Mamdani’s surprise election win last week shocked many in his party and upset former U.S. President Donald Trump and his allies. They called Mamdani a “radical extremist.”

Trump’s Republican Party is now using Mamdani as an example to say the Democrats are becoming too extreme. They hope this will push voters away from the Democrats in upcoming elections.

Trump, speaking on Fox News, called Mamdani a “pure communist” and a “radical leftist lunatic.” He said Mamdani would be bad for New York. Trump also warned that if Mamdani wins and Trump becomes president again, New York might not get money from the federal government unless Mamdani follows Trump’s policies.

In the past, Trump has also said he would cut funding to Democrat-led cities, especially those that act as “sanctuary cities.” These are places that don’t fully cooperate with immigration authorities to protect undocumented immigrants.

Mamdani appeared on TV too. He said he would keep New York a sanctuary city so that immigrants could live freely and fully take part in city life.

When asked on NBC’s “Meet the Press” if he’s a communist, Mamdani, who is 33 and wants to become New York’s first Muslim mayor, said, “No, I am not.”

He added that Trump talks about how he looks, sounds, and where he’s from to distract people from the real issues Mamdani is fighting for — like helping working people who Trump claimed to support but later ignored.

Mamdani was born in Uganda and is now a New York State Assembly member. Before the election, he was behind former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the polls. But he gained support by promising lower rents, free daycare, free buses, and other ideas to help regular people in New York, a city known for being very expensive.

Even though there are three times more Democrats than Republicans in New York, Mamdani is not guaranteed to win the November election. Mayor Eric Adams, a Democrat, is running again as an independent. Andrew Cuomo might also run without a party.
