Mariah Carey Honoured with Video Vanguard Award at 2025 MTV VMAs
New York — American pop icon Mariah Carey was celebrated at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, receiving the prestigious Video Vanguard Award for her lifelong contributions to music. The ceremony, held at the UBS Arena, was hosted by rapper LL Cool J and featured a star-studded lineup of performers and nominees.
Carey, who entered the night with eight nominations but only won one—Best R&B Video for her song Type Dangerous—used her Lifetime Achievement moment to deliver a cheeky, memorable speech. “I just had one question, what in the Sam Hill were you waiting for?” joked the six-time Grammy winner, before softening the tone with a laugh: “I’m kidding. I love you!”
Reflecting on her career, Carey said, “Being here brings back amazing memories. Music videos are my way of life, visualising the sheer frenzy of it all.” She added with a smile, “Let’s be honest, sometimes, it’s just an excuse to bring the drama and do things I wouldn’t do in real life.”
The superstar concluded with gratitude for her enduring platform: “I’ve learned that music evolves, videos evolve, but the fun—that is eternal. Thank you, MTV, for playing my videos.”
The night also saw big wins for artists including Ariana Grande, Sabrina Carpenter, and Lady Gaga.
