Mother-in-law of UK PM Sunak appointed to Indian parliament
The British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak mother-in-law ended her job working for her wealthy husband’s internet company’s charitable arm on Friday when she was appointed to the Indian parliament.
The 73-year-old Sudha Murthy was once the head of the Infosys Foundation, which her husband N.R. Narayana Murthy co-founded in 1981 as the charitable arm of the multinational software giant Infosys.
2009 saw the marriage of the couple’s daughter Akshata to Sunak.
Following President Droupadi Murmu’s announcement of Murthy’s nomination to the upper chamber, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his “delight.”
Her “contributions to diverse fields including social work, philanthropy, and education have been immense and inspiring,” he said on social media.
The majority of the members of India’s upper house are chosen by election, but the president appoints 12 of them—typically accomplished public figures—to the assembly for six-year terms.
Murthy’s appointment is effective right now.
Murthy, a famous author and engineer by profession, is recognized with founding libraries in rural regions through her organization.
For her achievements in social work, Sudha was awarded India’s third-highest civilian honor, the Padma Bhushan, by the government last year.
Her spouse Narayana is believed to be worth $4.7 billion.
He has previously stated that in order to launch his company, which is now the first Indian company to be listed on the New York stock exchange and the seventh-largest in India by market capitalization, he had to borrow money from his wife.
In 2022, a significant year for India’s relationship with its erstwhile colonial ruler, Sunak, then 43, became the first prime minister of South Asian heritage to hold the position in Britain.
The South Asian nation eclipsed Britain to become the fifth-largest economy in the world just weeks before the 75th anniversary of India’s independence from Britain was celebrated in August of that year.
