Netanyahu to Visit Trump on Gaza Ceasefire Push
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will visit U.S. President Donald Trump on July 7. This will be his third visit since Trump returned to power in January.
Trump recently said he hopes the fighting in Gaza will stop within a week.
A U.S. official confirmed the visit to the news agency AFP, but asked not to be named.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Netanyahu wants to meet Trump, and both sides are trying to pick a final date. She added that ending the war in Gaza has been one of Trump’s top goals since taking office.
This week, Israeli Minister Ron Dermer will go to the White House to help plan the meeting between Trump and Netanyahu.
Netanyahu was the first foreign leader to visit Trump during his second term, back in February. During that visit, Trump surprised everyone by saying the U.S. might “take over” Gaza. Netanyahu visited again in April.
Netanyahu to Visit Trump on July 7 to Talk About Gaza War
Now that a short 12-day war between Israel and Iran is over, Trump sees a chance to reach a peace deal in Gaza. He wants to add it to the other peace deals he has already made.
Trump said, “We think even next week, we’re going to get a ceasefire.” On Sunday, he posted on his Truth Social account, urging Israel to agree to a deal in Gaza.
However, fighting in Gaza is still going on. On Monday, Israeli forces killed at least 51 people, including 24 people at a seaside rest area, according to Gaza’s civil defense agency.
On the weekend, Trump also seemed to pressure Israel by using the topic of U.S. aid money. He suggested that Israel should drop the corruption charges against Netanyahu. He said the U.S. gives billions of dollars to support Israel and added, “We are not going to stand for this.”
The war in Gaza began after Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, killing 1,219 people, mostly civilians. Hamas also took 251 hostages. Israel says 49 are still held in Gaza, including 27 who are likely dead.
Israel’s response has killed at least 56,531 people in Gaza, most of them civilians, according to Gaza’s health ministry. The United Nations has confirmed the numbers are reliable.
