In Gujranwala, a student is executed for blaspheming over WhatsApp chats

A court in this location has condemned a 22-year-old student to death on grounds of blasphemy over WhatsApp texts.

According to the court, he posted blasphemous images and videos with the goal of offending Muslims’ religious sentiments.

In the same case, a seventeen-year-old received a life sentence. Each has refuted any misconduct. The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) in Lahore’s cybercrime unit filed the case in 2022. A municipal court in the city of Gujranwala was assigned the case.

The court decided last week to execute the 22-year-old for having prepared profane images and films. The younger defendant shared the material and was sentenced to life in prison.

The plaintiff claimed to have obtained the images and videos from three separate cell phone numbers.

After looking through the plaintiff’s phone, the FIA claimed to have proof that “obscene material” had been emailed to him.

The two students had been “trapped in a false case,” according to the defense attorneys.

The BBC was informed by the death-row inmate’s father—whose name has not been made public—that he will be appealing to the Lahore High Court.

The court stated that because the other pupil is a juvenile, he was given a life sentence as opposed to the death penalty.
