Motaz Azaiza is among the 100 most significant individuals of 2024
The much awaited annual list of TIME Magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world has been revealed, including notable figures in a variety of professions. Motaz Azaiza is one of the prominent individuals this year; his participation highlights his crucial involvement during the current unrest in the Middle East.
A meticulous screening procedure was used to identify people who have made a significant impact on culture, society, and international affairs. The TIME 100 list included Palestinian photographer Motaz because of his striking photos that told the experiences of those living during Israel’s invasion of Palestine.
Motaz was dubbed the “world’s eyes and ears in his native Gaza” by TIME. The description went on to say, The 25-year-old Palestinian photographer, equipped with a camera and a ‘PRESS’ flak jacket, spent almost four months recording life under Israeli bombardment: families uprooted from their homes, mothers lamenting loved ones, a guy buried beneath the debris.
It went on, “His photos provided an inside look of Gaza that very few members of the foreign press, who have been virtually shut out of the Strip, could match. He did so at tremendous risk: since October 7, at least 95 journalists have died in Gaza—the bloodiest time for the press since the Committee to Protect Journalists started keeping count of deaths in 1992.
Several more have been hurt or taken into custody. Motaz’s focus has changed since leaving Gaza in January to include advocating for international engagement and increasing public awareness of the situation.”
Through her lens, Motaz has given a moving insight into the lives of those impacted by Israel’s increasing brutality toward Palestine, giving voices that are frequently left out of narratives in mainstream media a forum. His committed photojournalism has brought their experiences to a worldwide audience, bearing witness to the tenacity and hardships of people affected by the one-sided conflict started by Israel.
The inclusion of Motaz on TIME100 serves as a reminder of the ability of visual storytelling to influence attitudes and promote comprehension in the face of complicated geopolitical realities. His unwavering and brave effort serves as a tribute to the eternal significance of empathy, compassion, and the pursuit of justice on a worldwide scale while the globe struggles with persistent issues.
Notable individuals honored on this year’s list, in addition to Motaz, are the Israeli hostage’s mother Rachel Goldberg-Polin, negotiators William Burns and Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani. The experiences of each person highlight the significant influence that current events have had on millions of people’s lives as well as regional dynamics.
A number of well-known figures in the entertainment industry have made the cut. Both “limitless, fearless” Dev Patel and Dua Lipa—who “moves with a lightness in a heavy world—bold, playful, and self-aware”—were on the list. In addition, Alia Bhatt “formidable talent” helped her land a spot on the prestigious and powerful list. TIME called the Bollywood actress “a businesswoman and a philanthropist who leads with integrity.”
“Alia superpower is her ability to mix movie-star magnetism with authenticity and sensitivity,” stated her description on the list. She is a brilliant performer, and as a person, she exudes the confidence and inventiveness necessary to become a true global star.” America Ferrera, Michael J. Fox, Sofia Coppola, and “actor Taraji P. Henson, who is fighting for equality in Hollywood” are among the other well-known figures.
