What is known about the fire at the ancient stock market in Copenhagen?

People rushed to salvage the artworks and antiquities from the ancient stock market building in Copenhagen on Tuesday as a large fire broke out and the building began to collapse.

Videos taken at the site showed the flames circling the unusual 56-meter-tall tower, one of Denmark’s oldest structures, and eventually bringing it to the ground.

Jakob Engel-Schmidt, the minister of culture, said that 400 years of Danish cultural history had been destroyed.

The adjacent square was reportedly evacuated, according to the local media.

The structure that has been consumed dates back to 1625 and is located next to the Folketing, the Danish Parliament, which is housed in Christiansborg Castle, a royal castle.

The historic Copenhagen Stock Exchange structure was being renovated.

The historic stock exchange was being refurbished and had been covered with plastic to keep it safe.

Henrik Grage, a local artisan, was reported by the BBC as saying that the day was terrible.

“This is our Notre Dame,” he remarked, drawing parallels between it and the April 5, 2019, fire in Paris that destroyed the cathedral’s roof and spire.

Rescue officials observed that the scaffolding made the task more challenging while the local authorities investigated the source of the fire.

The structure sustained significant damage due to the intense fire.

Chief of emergency services Jakob Vedsted Andersen claimed that firemen had an extremely difficult time getting beneath the ancient copper roof.

The fire was tough to witness, according to local museum inspector Benjamin Asmussen, who spoke to Denmark’s TV2 since the stock exchange was full with paintings depicting Danes who had been significant to Danish history since the 17th century.

Danish King Christian IV commissioned the Slotsholmen building to become the Copenhagen Stock Exchange.
