5.5 Earthquake Hits Punjab KP Islamabad
Moderate Earthquake Shakes Parts of Punjab, KP, and Islamabad
ISLAMABAD – A moderate earthquake rattled parts of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Thursday, with tremors felt in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and surrounding areas.
Reports also confirmed that the shaking was noticeable in Peshawar, Swat, Upper Dir, Bisham, Attock, and Chitral.
According to the Seismological Center, the earthquake registered a magnitude of 5.5 on the Richter scale, occurring at a depth of 195 kilometers. The epicenter was traced to Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region.
This is not the first time the region has experienced tremors this month. Earlier in September, Islamabad and several districts of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were jolted by a similar earthquake.
The National Seismic Monitoring Centre noted that the tremors originated in the Hindu Kush area at a depth of 111 kilometers.
Residents in cities including Abbottabad, Malakand, Mardan, Hangu, Nowshera, Battagram, Bajaur, Mohmand, Buner, Mianwali, and Gujranwala also reported feeling the shaking.
Seismologists say that Pakistan’s proximity to the junction of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates makes the region prone to recurring seismic activity, and they advise vigilance as smaller shocks may continue.
