Pakistan Floods 2025: Over 4.4 Million Affected in Punjab as Crisis Worsens

Punjab – Widespread flooding in Punjab has impacted 4,489 villages and affected more than 4.49 million people, according to the latest report from the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA).

The report highlights that 672 villages along the Sutlej River and 1,482 along the Ravi River have been inundated. Authorities have moved approximately 2.45 million residents to safer locations. To support relief efforts, 396 relief camps, 490 medical camps, and 405 veterinary camps have been established across the affected districts.

The floods have also forced the relocation of over 1.9 million livestock. Water levels at major dams remain high, with Mangla Dam at 92% capacity and Tarbela Dam completely full. Across the border in India, Bhakra Dam is at 90%, Pong at 99%, and Thein at 97%.

Tragically, the disaster has claimed 97 lives in Punjab so far. In response, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has ordered authorities to expedite relief distribution and begin compensation for victims.

Earlier, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif declared a Climate and Agriculture Emergency across Pakistan following the torrential rains and devastating floods. Speaking at a federal cabinet meeting, he announced the formation of a special committee to assess damages and plan rehabilitation. The committee will include all four provincial chief ministers, relevant federal ministers, and senior officials.

“The responsibility of addressing flood losses does not rest solely with the federal government,” Prime Minister Sharif emphasized, urging provincial governments to actively participate in relief and compensation efforts.

Pakistan is currently grappling with a catastrophic flood crisis fueled by relentless monsoon rains, flash floods, and glacial lake outbursts. So far, over 800 people have lost their lives, and more than 1.2 million others have been affected across multiple provinces.

The floods have destroyed homes, infrastructure, and livelihoods, deepening economic challenges with potential losses estimated at $50 billion.
