Portugal to Recognize Palestinian State Amid Gaza Crisis, Following Other Western Nations

Lisbon has confirmed that Portugal will officially recognize the State of Palestine on Sunday, September 21, citing the “extremely worrying evolution of the conflict,” the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, and Israel’s repeated threats to annex Palestinian land.

The move comes as Britain, Canada, France, and several other Western nations are reportedly preparing to extend recognition at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly, which opens next week in New York. The assembly will focus on the long-standing two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Israel has strongly condemned the recognition plans, warning that they effectively reward Hamas for its deadly attack on October 7, 2023. Nevertheless, the deteriorating situation in Gaza, where the UN has raised alarms about famine in Gaza City, has persuaded even some of Israel’s traditional allies to support Palestinian statehood.

On Friday, a French presidential adviser indicated that Andorra, Australia, Belgium, Luxembourg, Malta, and San Marino also intend to recognize Palestine.

Currently, roughly three-quarters of the UN’s 193 member states already recognize the State of Palestine.
