Omar Ayub Shibli Faraz Zartaj Gul Seek Court Relief After Disqualification

PTI Leaders Go to Court After Being Disqualified

Three senior leaders from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) are trying to get legal help after being disqualified from politics and sentenced to jail.

Omar Ayub and Shibli Faraz have asked the Peshawar High Court to cancel the decision of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). They say they were removed from their seats in Parliament without a fair chance to speak.

Shibli Faraz, a PTI senator, was given 10 years in jail by an Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC). After that, he lost his Senate seat. Omar Ayub also lost his National Assembly seat after a similar case.

The two leaders are asking the court to call the ECP’s decision unfair and illegal.

At the same time, another PTI leader, Zartaj Gul, has filed a protective bail request. She also got a 10-year prison sentence by the ATC in Faisalabad, but she was not in court when the verdict was given.

Zartaj Gul wants to appeal the sentence in the Lahore High Court, but needs bail so she can avoid arrest while doing that.

All three leaders are facing terrorism-related charges from the May 9 riots, which led to their jail sentences and political disqualification.

Their legal requests have been sent to the Peshawar High Court, and they have asked for urgent hearings.

Background:

The ECP recently disqualified multiple PTI lawmakers, including Omar Ayub, Shibli Faraz, and Zartaj Gul. These decisions were made after the ATC sentenced them to 10 years in jail for their role in the May 9 protests.

The disqualifications were made under Article 63(1)(h) of the Constitution, which says convicted people cannot stay in Parliament.

Other PTI members disqualified include Rai Haider Ali, Hamid Raza, Rai Hassan Nawaz, Ansar Iqbal, Junaid Afzal Sahi, and Muhammad Murtaza Iqbal.
