Qaiser Sheikh Sugar Prices Out of Control
ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Investment Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh has openly acknowledged that the PML-N-led government failed to keep sugar prices under control in Pakistan.
In an exclusive interview, with Sheikh said that despite repeated assurances, sugar prices surged unexpectedly, raising concerns about possible stockpiling and mismanagement in the sector.
He revealed that the cabinet had earlier been assured that sugar reserves were sufficient and that prices would remain stable.
“For some time, prices did remain steady, but then suddenly they spiked. Those who have long controlled the sugar industry continue to influence the market,” the minister said.
Sheikh called for an inquiry into the institutions that had claimed sugar stocks were adequate.
“It must be investigated whether the stock actually existed, and if so, where the sugar went. Sugar is an essential daily-use commodity for ordinary citizens, so there should be a transparent probe to determine if hoarding took place,” he added.
Admitting the government’s shortcomings, Sheikh said, “The prime minister himself was cautious, yet we could not control the situation. I am a member of the cabinet, but even then, we failed to manage the matter effectively.”
On the political front, Sheikh commented on the PTI founder, noting, “Although he does not seem actively present at the moment, he remains a significant political figure. He must rise above his ego. Politics requires compromise and reconciliation; stubbornness alone cannot move it forward.”
