Rabi-ul-Awwal Moon Likely to Be Sighted on August 24

KARACHI – The new Islamic month of Rabi-ul-Awwal, which holds special significance for Muslims as it marks the birth of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), is expected to begin on August 25, 2025.

According to the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), the moon for Rabi-ul-Awwal 1447 Hijri will be born on August 23 at 11:06 AM. By the evening of August 24, the moon will be over 32 hours old, making its sighting highly likely.

A SUPARCO spokesperson said that in coastal areas, there will be a 45-minute gap between sunset and moonset — a favorable condition for visibility. Based on these calculations, the crescent is expected to be sighted on Sunday evening, August 24.

If confirmed by the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, the first of Rabi-ul-Awwal will fall on Monday, August 25, while the 12th Rabi-ul-Awwal — observed as Eid Milad-un-Nabi — will be marked on Friday, September 5.

This will be followed the next day, September 6, by Pakistan’s Defense Day, which commemorates the sacrifices of the armed forces. While it is not a public holiday, officials have hinted that the government may consider declaring one this year in light of Pakistan’s recent victory against India in the May conflict.

The final decision regarding the start of the month rests with the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee.
