India tests the new Agni Prime ballistic missile in flight
The next generation Agni Prime ballistic missile from India has successfully undergone flight testing, the Defense Ministry of the nation announced on Thursday.
The flight test was carried out on Wednesday night from Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Island, off the coast of Odisha state, by the Strategic Forces Command and the Defence Research and Development Organization, the ministry said in a statement.
The ministry stated that senior defense officials saw the launch and that “the test met all the trial objectives validating its reliable performance, as confirmed from the data captured by a number of range sensors deployed at different locations, including two downrange ships placed at the terminal point.”
“An excellent force multiplier for the armed forces will be the missile’s successful development and introduction,” stated Rajnath Singh, Minister of Defence.
The maiden flight test of the locally built Agni-V missile, which is equipped with Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology and can carry multiple warheads on a single missile, was carried out by India last month.
