Trump Faces Setback in Russia Ukraine Peace Push

Trump Struggles to Push Russia-Ukraine Ceasefire Talks Forward

WASHINGTON – Nearly two weeks after former U.S. President Donald Trump met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, efforts to broker a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine have seen little progress.

Overnight Russian strikes on Ukraine killed at least 15 people and caused heavy damage to several buildings, Ukrainian officials confirmed.

Speaking to reporters, Trump’s spokesperson, Karoline Leavitt, said the former president was disappointed but not surprised by the escalation. “These are two countries that have been at war for a very long time,” she noted, adding that Trump will issue a new statement on the situation later Thursday.

Leavitt also highlighted the scale of the conflict, saying Russian attacks remain deadly while Ukrainian forces have carried out significant strikes on Russian oil refineries in recent weeks. Trump, she said, continues to push for peace but believes “perhaps both sides of this war are not ready to end it themselves.”

Meanwhile, U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff told Fox News that he plans to meet Ukrainian officials in New York this Friday. Trump has been urging direct talks between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, hoping to later join a three-way discussion aimed at halting the war.

However, such a meeting remains unlikely for now. When asked earlier this week why Putin refuses to meet Zelenskiy, Trump remarked that Putin “simply does not like him.”
