Ukraine Russia to Resume Peace Talks Amid Escalating War

KYIV – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Tuesday that a high-level Ukrainian delegation will take part in fresh peace talks with Russia, despite the Kremlin downplaying chances of a breakthrough in the over three-year-long conflict.

“The delegation will be headed by Rustem Umerov and will include representatives from Ukrainian intelligence, the foreign ministry, and the president’s office,” Zelensky stated on social media.

Moscow, however, has yet to disclose the composition of its team. In earlier rounds of negotiations, Russia was represented by Vladimir Medinsky, a pro-Kremlin historian and head of the Russian Union of Writers, whom Kyiv criticized as lacking decision-making authority.

Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine remains committed to several core goals in the negotiations: the release of prisoners of war, the safe return of abducted Ukrainian children, a halt to ongoing violence, and preparations for a potential summit between national leaders.

The upcoming round of talks follows earlier meetings held in Istanbul on May 16 and June 2, which occurred as the United States ramped up diplomatic pressure for a resolution. However, those sessions yielded only minimal progress, limited to prisoner and body exchanges.

Since then, Russia has escalated its military campaign, launching intensified airstrikes and seizing additional territory along the frontlines. Ukrainian officials argue that Moscow’s actions reflect a lack of genuine interest in ending the war it began in February 2022.

The renewed dialogue comes at a time when international calls for de-escalation are growing louder, but both sides appear deeply entrenched in their opposing visions for peace.
