UOP makes ‘shalwar kameez’ compulsory for students
The University of Peshawar is mostly known as UOP and Peshawar University. It is a public research university located in Peshawar, KPK. It is one of the highly ranked and oldest universities in KPK.
The university was founded in 1950. With approximately 14,000 enrolled students attending the university. It has six academic faculties with forty postgraduate departments as well as two “centers of excellence. The university is known for its research in social, medical, and natural sciences. Having eight research centers located inside the campus. It is spread over an area of 1,045 acres (4 km2) as a residential campus. The university is the first public university to be established in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The UOP has announced a dress code for students, first introduced in 2013.
As per a notification issued by the university management, women must wear “white shalwar with kameez of their own choice, while men should wear decent/modest clothes.”
The dress code is being implemented to “lessen the financial burden on the parents” said the university’s spokesperson while talking about the notification.
Hazara University and Bacha Khan University, Charsadda have already implemented the dress codes for students. After the Peshawar University, the dress code will also be implemented at the University of Engineering and Technology, University of Agriculture Peshawar, and Islamia College University, whose buildings are also situated in the main University.
A spokesman for the university said that the aim of the dress code is to alleviate the burden of expenditures on parents of the students and also to bring uniformity among them.
