Trump Calls Musk’s New Political Party ‘Ridiculous’
One day after Elon Musk announced he’s starting a new political party in the U.S., former President Donald Trump spoke to reporters before boarding Air Force One in New Jersey.
Trump said, “Starting a third party is ridiculous. We already have great success with the Republican Party. The U.S. has always had two main parties, and a third party only brings confusion. Third parties never work, so he can try, but I think it’s a waste of time.”
Later, Trump posted more comments about Musk on his social media platform, Truth Social. He said, “I’m sad to see Elon Musk acting so crazy. He’s like a train wreck over the past five weeks.”
Why Musk Started a New Party
Musk said he’s creating the “America Party” because of a new tax and spending bill passed by Trump. Musk believes the bill will bankrupt the country.
On Sunday, Musk wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “What was the point of @DOGE if Trump is just going to raise the debt by $5 trillion?”
Musk plans to use his new party to defeat Republican lawmakers in next year’s elections, especially those who supported what he calls the “big, beautiful bill.”
A Broken Friendship
Musk used to be close to Trump. He supported Trump’s 2024 campaign with millions of dollars and often visited the White House. But after the new bill was signed into law on Friday, their friendship ended. Musk tried to fix things, but it didn’t work.
Trump said Musk is angry because the bill removes tax benefits for Tesla’s electric cars. Trump also warned he might cancel government contracts and funding for Tesla and SpaceX.
NASA Controversy
Trump also criticized the decision to name Jared Isaacman—an ally of Musk—as the head of NASA. Isaacman is a billionaire private astronaut who supports Democrats. Trump had chosen him in December but later withdrew the nomination without explanation.
Trump said on Truth Social, “It’s not right to let someone so close to Elon Musk run NASA when NASA works so closely with his companies. My top job is to protect the American people!”
Business Impact
After Musk announced his new party, a company called Azoria Partners delayed launching its new Tesla investment fund. The company said Musk’s political activities could be a conflict with his job as Tesla CEO.
Azoria CEO James Fishback said on X, “The board should meet right away and ask Elon to explain his political goals. We need to see if he can still focus on running Tesla full-time.”
