Emma Watson on Acting What She Misses and Doesnt

Emma Watson Opens Up About What She Misses—and Doesn’t Miss—About Acting

Emma Watson, 35, known worldwide for her iconic role as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter series, shared some candid thoughts on her relationship with acting in a recent interview. Since her last on-screen appearance in Greta Gerwig’s Little Women (2019), Watson has largely stepped back from acting to focus on her studies and other pursuits.

Reflecting on her career, Watson admitted, “In some ways, I really won the lottery. What happened to me is so unusual.” She added that while acting itself has been a remarkable experience, the promotional side of the work can be challenging.

“The balance of that can get quite thrown off,” she confessed. “I think I’ll be honest and straightforward, and say: I do not miss selling things. I found that to be quite soul-destroying. But I do very much miss using my skill set, and I very much miss the art.”

Watson elaborated on the aspects of acting she truly loves: “The moment you get on a film set, you don’t get very long for rehearsal. But the moment you get to talk through a scene—or prepare and think about how you want to do something—and then the minute the camera rolls, and you can completely forget about everything else in the world except that one moment, it’s such an intense form of meditation. You just cannot be anywhere else.”

The Beauty and the Beast star emphasized the intensity of the experience, saying, “I miss that profoundly. I don’t miss the pressure. I forgot it was a lot of pressure.”

Watson’s reflections offer a rare glimpse into the highs and lows of life in front of the camera, highlighting the aspects of acting that bring joy—and those that can drain the soul.
