Orioles Edge Pirates in Extra-Inning Thriller, Extend Hot Streak

Baltimore — The Orioles kept their winning streak alive with a thrilling extra-inning victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday, marking their second consecutive walk-off win and fourth in the past five games.

Pittsburgh starter Paul Skenes was sharp early, pitching five shutout innings and allowing just a solo home run to Spencer Horwitz in the fourth. Skenes struck out eight and gave up only two hits without issuing a walk. Pirates reliever Carmen Mlodzinski contributed two scoreless innings before Isaac Mattson took over in the eighth. Despite this, the Orioles rallied late.

The game remained tied 1-1 until the 10th inning. Albert Suarez (2-0) closed out the frame for Baltimore, holding off a threatening runner on third following a wild pitch. Kyle Nicolas (1-1) took the loss for Pittsburgh after issuing a walk and surrendering a bunt single that set up the go-ahead hit.

Baltimore’s offense came alive in the eighth inning. Colton Cowser and Dylan Carlson singled to start the frame, followed by two popouts. Jackson Holliday then delivered the RBI single that tied the game and eventually set the stage for the walk-off.

Orioles starter Tyler Wells was outstanding in his second big-league start of the season, going 6 2/3 innings and allowing only Horwitz’s homer and a single walk while striking out six. Relievers Shawn Dubin, Kade Strowd, Rico Garcia, and Suarez combined to hold Pittsburgh to just two hits over the remainder of the game.

Skenes reached a milestone despite the loss, surpassing 200 strikeouts for the season with a total of 203. Baltimore’s Ryan Mountcastle and Beavers contributed key hits off the ace, with Beavers collecting two hits—the only player with multiple hits in the game.

With the win, Baltimore improves to 68-77, having won seven of their last eight games, while Pittsburgh drops to 64-82 with a five-game losing streak.
