Leading Taliban adviser from Afghanistan killed in Pakistan

Near the Pakistan-Afghan border on Saturday, an unidentified assailant killed a close aide of Taliban supreme commander Mullah Habitullah Akhundzada and the former bodyguard of another leader, Mullah Mansoor, in Pakistan.

The deceased, identified as Mohammad Omar Jan Akhundzada, was assaulted on Thursday night while presiding over evening prayers at a mosque in Quetta.

As of right now, no one has taken quick credit for the fatal shooting.

Originating from the region of Zabul, Akhundzada was the head of a seminary in Kandahar.

Zabihullah Mujahid, the spokesperson for the Afghan Taliban, encouraged local authorities to take severe action against those guilty for the killing on social media site X, which was formerly Twitter.

According to reports, the deceased was visiting relatives in the region for the Eid holidays.

The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has experienced a shockwave with the death of a prominent member, as the commander was allegedly targeted by the extremist Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP) in Pakistan.

After the foreign forces headed by the United States withdrew from Afghanistan in August 2021, several prominent religious leaders and Taliban associates have been targeted for murder throughout the country, including Kabul, the capital.

Many of these assaults have been attributed to the ISKP, a strong opponent of the Taliban and a provincial branch of the Islamic State.
