Regret US for vetoing a draft resolution for Palestine UN membership: FO

Pakistan regretted the US decision to reject the draft resolution and conveyed its sadness on Friday that the UN Security Council was unable to come to a conclusion about Palestine’s full membership in the UN.

Pakistan expresses profound disappointment with the outcome of the UNSC debate held last night and its failure to come to an agreement on recommending Palestine’s admission to the UNGA. The draft resolution that would have granted Palestine full UN membership was vetoed by the US, which is regrettable, Foreign Office spokesman Mumtaz Zahra Baloch stated in her weekly news conference.

A day prior, the US had used its veto power in the Security Council to prevent the UN from officially recognizing Palestine as a state, so preventing the Palestinians from being granted full membership in the organization.

According to the FO spokeswoman, Palestine’s admission to the UN will be a historic moment of justice and validate their fundamental right to self-determination after 75 years of persecution.

The FO stressed, The people of Palestine have a right to live in an independent state inside the borders drawn on June 4, 1967, with its capital in Al-Quds.

Mumtaz mentioned the recent visit of a delegation headed by Prince Faisal bin Farhan, the Saudi Arabian Minister of Foreign Affairs, and added that during the visit, the counterparts from both countries discussed a wide range of regional and global issues.

According to the office, the two ministers spoke about the growing instability in the area and called for an early end to the hostilities in Gaza as well as the unfettered delivery of humanitarian goods.

Six months into an Israeli-Hamas conflict in the Gaza Strip, and as Israel continues to build settlements in the occupied West Bank—which the UN regards as illegal—the Palestinians launched their bid for full UN membership.

In a statement, President Mahmoud Abbas of Palestine denounced the US veto as “unfair, unethical, and unjustified.”
