Grigor Dimitrov Retires Injured at Wimbledon Again

According to ESPN, Grigor Dimitrov had another unlucky moment at a Grand Slam tournament. For the fifth time in a row, he couldn’t finish his match — the longest streak for any male player in the Open era.

The 33-year-old Bulgarian started strong and won the first two sets 6-3 and 7-5. His opponent, Jannik Sinner, was also struggling with pain in his elbow after slipping early in the match.

But at 2-2 in the third set, Dimitrov suddenly grabbed his chest in pain right after serving. He walked a little and then sat down on the grass.

Sinner quickly came over to check on him. Dimitrov told him, “My pec” (referring to chest muscle pain) and went to the side for medical help.

A doctor and trainer checked him while Sinner waited nearby. After a few minutes, Dimitrov left the court but came back later to say he couldn’t continue the match.

This is the 10th time Dimitrov has had to retire from a Grand Slam match. It’s a tough situation for someone who once reached the Wimbledon semi-final in 2014 and made it to the final four at three different Grand Slams.

He also retired earlier this year at the Australian Open and French Open, and last year at Wimbledon and the US Open.

Sinner was leading 3-2 in the third set when Dimitrov left the match. Now, Sinner will get an MRI scan for his elbow injury. If he’s healthy, he will play against Ben Shelton in the quarterfinals.

For now, Dimitrov’s injury is another sad moment in his recent bad luck at big tournaments. Fans and other players hope he gets well soon and returns to playing at his best.
