Emma Thompson Reveals Donald Trump Asked Her Out the Day Her Divorce Was Finalized
Veteran actress Emma Thompson, 66, recently shared a surprising story from the late 1990s — the same day her divorce from actor-filmmaker Kenneth Branagh was finalized in 1998, then-businessman Donald Trump called her and asked her out on a date.
Speaking at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland over the weekend, the Sense and Sensibility star recalled the unexpected phone call while she was on set. “I was in a trailer when my phone rang, and a man said, ‘Hello, this is Donald Trump,’” she said.
At first, Thompson thought it was a prank. “I asked, ‘How can I help you?’ thinking maybe he needed directions or something,” she joked. But Trump soon made his intentions clear: “I’d love you to come stay at one of my beautiful places. Maybe we could have dinner.”
Thompson responded politely, “That’s very sweet. Thank you so much. I’ll get back to you.”
She realized that the timing was no coincidence. “On that day, my divorce decree had come through. And I bet he was scouting for someone suitable — a nice divorcée,” Thompson said, noting that Trump had recently separated from his second wife, Marla Maples. “Honestly, that’s a bit like stalking.”
Reflecting humorously on the moment, she added, “I could have gone on a date with Donald Trump, and then I’d have a story to tell. Maybe I could have even changed the course of American history.”
