India Fails to Sway Quad SCO Against Pakistan

After failing to get support at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), India turned to another group called the Quad. This group includes the United States, Australia, Japan, and India. India tried to use this platform to speak against Pakistan.

A statement was released by the U.S. State Department after a Quad meeting on July 2 in Washington. The statement strongly condemned terrorism, but it did not mention Pakistan by name.

Instead, it asked all UN member countries to work with the right authorities to punish those responsible for terrorist attacks. The wording did not support India’s claims against Pakistan.

This is not the first time India’s efforts to blame Pakistan have failed. After the Pahalgam attack, the UN Security Council also avoided blaming anyone directly. This was different from 2019, when the UN’s statement after the Pulwama attack was closer to India’s viewpoint.

The Quad’s careful wording now shows that India’s partners are becoming uncomfortable with being pulled into India’s regional conflicts.

Background:
India recently refused to sign a joint statement at an SCO meeting in Qingdao, China, because other members did not agree with its false claims against Pakistan about the Pahalgam attack.

That meeting was attended by countries like Pakistan, China, and Russia. Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif represented Islamabad. It was the first time in years that top officials from both India and Pakistan attended the same event.
