Floods Claim 307 Lives in KP, PM Orders Urgent Relief Efforts
Peshawar – The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has reported that at least 307 people have lost their lives due to recent floods and rain-related incidents across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). The fatalities include 279 men, 15 women, and 13 children, while 23 people were injured, among them 17 men, 4 women, and 2 children.
According to district-wise data, Buner has been the hardest hit with 184 deaths, followed by Shangla (35), Mansehra (23), Bajaur (21), Swat (20), Battagram (15), and Lower Dir (5). The PDMA further revealed that 74 houses have been damaged, including 11 completely destroyed and 63 partially damaged.
The report identified Bajaur and Battagram as the most affected districts, with multiple fatal incidents also recorded in Swat, Torghar, Mansehra, and Shangla.
PM Shehbaz Orders Swift Action
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a high-level meeting to review the situation and directed the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to maintain close coordination with the KP government. He ordered officials to mobilize all resources for rescue and relief operations, stressing that food supplies, medicines, and other aid must be delivered immediately to the affected areas by road transport.
During the meeting, the NDMA chairman briefed the premier on the extent of the damage caused by heavy rains and flash floods.
Rescue Operations Underway
Rescue efforts are ongoing, with PDMA teams, local authorities, and volunteers working around the clock. However, officials have warned that intermittent heavy rains are expected to continue until August 21, which could worsen the crisis in already vulnerable districts.
Survivors have appealed for faster rescue operations and immediate arrangements for temporary shelters.
In Mansehra, lightning and a cloudburst triggered fresh flooding, resulting in more casualties and property losses. Meanwhile, in Swat’s Mingora, Malam Jabba, Haji Baba, Khwazakhela, and Marghazar, low-lying areas remain submerged. Hundreds of homes have been flooded, and access to several localities has been cut off.
Many residents, including women and children, have sought safety on rooftops, while others are attempting to evacuate on their own as the situation worsens.
