Eligibility Requirements for MEXT Scholarship 2024

Candidates must meet all the criteria listed below to be considered for the MEXT Scholarship:

Language Requirement: English

Countries Eligible: All countries around the world

Candidates must hold citizenship from a country that maintains diplomatic ties with Japan. Those holding Japanese citizenship at the time of application are ineligible.

For Undergraduate Students: Candidates must be between 17 and under 25 years of age and have completed 12 years of schooling or equivalent high school education (this includes students who are expected to graduate).

For Masters/PhD Students: Candidates must be under 35 years old and have completed a bachelor’s degree (this includes students who are expected to graduate). Alternatively, candidates should have completed 16 or 18 years of education.

For Teacher Training Students: Candidates must be under 35 years of age and have graduated from a college or teacher training college. They should also have a minimum of five years of teaching experience in primary, secondary. Furthermore, teachers train at colleges in their home country.

For Japanese Study Students: Candidates should be aged between 18 to 30 years. When they apply, they must be undergraduate students majoring in Japanese language or Japanese culture at a university outside Japan, and upon returning to their home countries, they must be enrolled at their home institution.

  1. Applicants for Bachelor’s programs: Proof of 12 years of schooling
  2. Applicants for Master’s programs: Bachelor’s degree
  3. Applicants for Ph.D. programs: Master’s degree

Note: If the original degree isn’t in English, you’ll need a notarized English translation.

  • Transcripts of Highest Degree with Official Seals (Including the grading system)
  1. Bachelor’s program applicants: Transcripts from 12 years of schooling
  2. Master’s program applicants: Bachelor’s degree transcripts
  3. Ph.D. program applicants: Master’s degree transcripts

Note: If the transcript isn’t in English, a notarized English translation is necessary.

  • Two Recommendation Letters

Letters should come from teachers, advisers, or employers familiar with your academic and research abilities, in English. (Applicable for research students)
