Trump Bill Faces GOP Revolt
Trump’s Big Bill Faces Trouble in the House
Former President Donald Trump is trying to get his major bill finally approved in the House of Representatives. The Senate already passed it, but many Republicans in the House are now against it. They are worried it will increase the national debt and hurt social programs.
The bill, called “One Big Beautiful Bill,” was supposed to move forward with a simple vote late at night, but the vote was delayed for hours. House Speaker Mike Johnson kept the vote open, hoping to convince lawmakers to support it. He said, “We’re going to get there tonight,” and stayed positive.
This bill was first passed by the House in May. Then, it went to the Senate, where it barely passed by one vote. Now, the House needs to approve the changes the Senate made.
What’s in the Bill?
More money for the military
Funds to deport undocumented migrants
$4.5 trillion to extend Trump’s earlier tax cuts
But:
It will increase the national debt by $3.4 trillion over 10 years
It makes the biggest cuts to Medicaid (a government health program for low-income people) since the 1960s
Why Are Some Republicans Against It?
Moderates fear the cuts to health care will hurt them in elections
Fiscal conservatives (budget hawks) say the savings are much smaller than promised
Trump can’t afford to lose more than three votes, but over 20 Republicans are thinking of voting “no.”
Some are calling the bill an “abomination” because of how much it cuts from health care. About 17 million people could lose health insurance, and many rural hospitals might close.
Longest Vote in History
One of the early test votes, which usually takes minutes, was kept open for over 7 hours, making it the longest vote in House history.
Speaker Johnson hopes Trump can convince Republicans to vote yes. Trump even called holdouts to the White House and posted on Truth Social:
“What are the Republicans waiting for??? MAGA IS NOT HAPPY, AND IT’S COSTING YOU VOTES!!!”
Democrats Plan to Use the Bill Against Republicans
Democrats say the bill takes from the poor and gives to the rich. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said:
“Shame on Senate Republicans for passing this disgusting abomination.”
