Trump Predicts Israel-Hamas Ceasefire as Gaza Aid Turns Deadly

When reporters asked Donald Trump how close Israel and Hamas were to stopping the war, he said, “We think there will be a ceasefire within the next week.”

The United States helped to arrange a ceasefire (a stop to the fighting) during the last days of President Joe Biden’s term, with help from Trump’s new team.

But in March, Israel broke that ceasefire. It launched new attacks on Hamas. Hamas had attacked Israel earlier on October 7, 2023.

After that, Israel also stopped food and other supplies from entering Gaza for over two months. This led to fears that people might starve.

Later, Israel allowed some food to enter Gaza again. This was done through a new system called the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). This group is supported by both the U.S. and Israel, and includes American security workers and Israeli soldiers working near Gaza.

Trump Says Ceasefire Between Israel and Hamas Could Happen Soon

However, the United Nations said on Friday that this new system is very dangerous. Many people have been killed while trying to get food. Israel responded by saying the UN is supporting Hamas.

People in Gaza and local leaders said many Palestinians have been killed at food distribution centers over the past few weeks.

Israel’s army said it did not target people trying to get food. The GHF also said its food centers are not responsible for the deaths.

But after many reports of violence, the UN and other aid groups spoke out on Friday. They said hungry people are being shot while trying to get food.

“The new system for giving out food has turned into a place where people are being killed,” said Philippe Lazzarini, the head of the UN agency for Palestinian aid (UNRWA). “This must stop. The UN should take over food delivery again,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

The health ministry in Gaza, which is controlled by Hamas, said over 500 people have been killed near food centers since late May.

Gaza’s civil defense teams also said many people have died while trying to get food.

“People are being killed just for trying to feed their families,” said UN Secretary-General António Guterres. “Looking for food should not mean a death sentence.”

The medical charity Doctors Without Borders (MSF) also criticized the GHF. They said it is “slaughter pretending to be humanitarian aid.”
