Trump, Netanyahu Push New Peace Plan Amid Gaza Offensive

Washington — Standing beside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House, U.S. President Donald Trump declared that the two leaders were “beyond very close” to securing a long-elusive peace deal for the Middle East.

Trump unveiled a 20-point plan that includes an immediate ceasefire, a hostage-prisoner swap, a phased Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, the disarmament of Hamas, and the formation of a transitional government under international supervision.

“I want to thank Prime Minister Netanyahu for agreeing to this plan and trusting that together we can finally end decades — even centuries — of bloodshed and open a new chapter of peace, security, and prosperity for the region,” Trump said.

The meeting marked Netanyahu’s fourth White House visit since Trump returned to office in January. For the Israeli leader, the talks were crucial after a wave of European governments formally recognized Palestinian statehood last week — a move condemned by Washington and Tel Aviv as a “reward for Hamas.”

Despite concerns in Israel over parts of the proposal, Netanyahu signaled support for Trump’s push. The U.S. president has made peace in the region a key pledge, insisting since his 2024 campaign that a breakthrough was imminent, though previous attempts have repeatedly collapsed.

Still, Hamas’s absence from the negotiations has cast doubt on the plan’s viability.

Israeli Tanks Advance in Gaza

The peace push coincided with intensifying ground fighting. Israeli tanks pressed deeper into Gaza City on Monday in what Netanyahu described as a decisive bid to eliminate Hamas’ remaining strongholds. The offensive has left large parts of Gaza devastated and worsened an already dire humanitarian crisis.

Netanyahu arrived at the White House in starkly different circumstances than his recent appearance at the U.N. General Assembly, where many delegates walked out during his speech. This time, he was welcomed warmly by Trump with a handshake at the front steps.

Past ceasefire initiatives brokered by Washington have collapsed due to unresolvable differences between Israel and Hamas. Netanyahu maintains that Israel will fight on until Hamas is fully dismantled, leaving the fate of Trump’s peace plan uncertain.

Trump says he will tell US military leaders, “We love them.”
