Trump Putin Set Alaska Summit on Ukraine Peace

Trump, Putin to Meet in Alaska for High-Stakes Ukraine Peace Talks

MOSCOW/WASHINGTON — The Kremlin has confirmed that Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump will meet next Friday, August 15, 2025, in Alaska to discuss ways to end the war in Ukraine.

Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov called the location “quite logical,” saying the two leaders are expected to focus on options for achieving a long-term peaceful settlement to the conflict.

The war, sparked by Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, has claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced millions. Eastern and southern Ukraine have suffered widespread destruction from relentless Russian bombardments.

Ahead of the summit, Putin held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The discussions come as Trump, now in his first months back in office, seeks to broker peace but has yet to secure a breakthrough.

Announcing the meeting on Truth Social, Trump described it as “highly anticipated” and hinted at possible “swapping of territories” between Ukraine and Russia, though he gave no details.

So far, three rounds of negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv have failed, and Putin continues to reject calls for a ceasefire or direct talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The Alaska summit will mark the first in-person meeting between sitting U.S. and Russian presidents since Joe Biden met Putin in Geneva in 2021. Trump and Putin last met in 2019 at a G20 summit in Japan, and have spoken by phone several times this year. Ushakov said Putin has also invited Trump to visit Russia in the future.

Meanwhile, the Kremlin said Putin briefed Xi on his talks with U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff, who visited Moscow earlier this week. Xi expressed support for a “long-term” solution, telling Putin he was pleased to see the U.S. and Russia maintain contact.

Russia and China have strengthened political, economic, and military ties since the war began, while both Xi and Modi have promoted their peace initiatives — efforts that so far have seen little success.
