Trump Opens White House TikTok Account
Trump Launches Official White House TikTok Account Amid Ongoing Debate Over App’s Future
WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump has officially launched a White House TikTok account, even as debate continues in Washington over the app’s ties to China and its future in the United States.
The new account, @whitehouse, went live Tuesday evening with a video montage of Trump declaring: “I am your voice.” The caption read: “America, we are BACK! What’s up, TikTok?”
Trump has long credited TikTok for helping him connect with young voters during his 2024 campaign against Democrat Kamala Harris, where his campaign account, @realdonaldtrump, gained more than 15 million followers. While the president frequently uses his own Truth Social platform and occasionally posts on X, the move highlights his growing reliance on TikTok to reach a wider audience.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the administration is determined to use every possible platform to share Trump’s message.
“President Trump’s message dominated TikTok during his presidential campaign, and we’re excited to build on that success in ways no other administration has before,” she said.
But Trump’s embrace of the app comes at a time of intense scrutiny in Washington. Lawmakers fear that data from U.S. users could be accessed by China’s government through TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance. U.S. intelligence agencies have previously warned that the app could be used to sway American opinion.
To address those concerns, Trump has been pushing a deal that would allow U.S. investors to purchase TikTok’s American operations. A 2024 law required TikTok to shut down in the U.S. by January 19, 2025, unless ByteDance had either sold its U.S. assets or shown clear progress toward a sale.
However, since beginning his second term on January 20, Trump has chosen not to enforce the shutdown. Instead, he has extended the deadline multiple times—first to April, then June 19, and most recently to September 17.
Those extensions have drawn sharp criticism from lawmakers who accuse the administration of sidestepping the law and downplaying national security risks.
For now, Trump’s White House TikTok account signals not only his determination to harness the platform’s massive reach but also the administration’s delicate balancing act between political communication and national security concerns.
