68 Migrants Killed in Yemen Boat Sinking
68 Migrants Die in Boat Tragedy Off Yemen Coast
YEMEN – A boat carrying migrants sank off the coast of southern Yemen, killing at least 68 people, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
The IOM’s chief in Yemen, Abdusattor Esoev, said only 12 out of 157 people on the boat have been rescued so far. Many are still missing, and their fate is unknown.
The boat was heading to Abyan province, a common route used by migrant smugglers. Most of the passengers were Ethiopian migrants, hoping to reach rich Gulf countries.
Despite the ongoing war in Yemen since 2014, many people from East Africa still try to cross the Red Sea to reach Yemen and then move on to other countries.
Thousands of migrants use what is known as the Eastern Route each year. They travel from Djibouti to Yemen, often facing dangerous conditions.
Yemeni security forces are now trying to find and recover more bodies from the water. Just last month, eight migrants died after smugglers forced them off a boat in the Red Sea.
The IOM says tens of thousands of migrants are now stuck in Yemen. Many suffer abuse, hunger, and violence during their journey.
In 2023, the IOM recorded at least 558 deaths on the Red Sea route, 462 of them caused by shipwrecks.
