Trump Slams India for Buying Russian Oil
Trump Aide Criticizes India for Buying Oil from Russia
WASHINGTON – A close aide to former U.S. President Donald Trump has strongly criticized India for continuing to buy oil from Russia.
Stephen Miller, who was Trump’s deputy chief of staff, said on Fox News that Trump thinks it is “not acceptable” for India to help fund the war in Ukraine by purchasing Russian oil.
Miller said, “People will be shocked to learn that India is tied with China in buying Russian oil. That’s an astonishing fact.”
This is one of the strongest comments made by a Trump official about India, which is a key U.S. partner in the Indo-Pacific region.
The Indian Embassy in Washington did not comment on the matter. However, Indian officials told Reuters that they will continue to buy oil from Russia, even if the U.S. is not happy about it.
Because of India’s deals with Russia, the U.S. has started a 25% tariff on Indian products. Trump has also warned that countries buying Russian oil could face 100% tariffs, unless Russia makes peace with Ukraine.
Still, Miller said Trump has a “tremendous” relationship with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
