UN Aid for Pakistan Flood Survivors Faces Urgent Funding Shortfall
UN Boosts Aid for Flood Survivors in Pakistan, Urges More Support
ISLAMABAD/NEW YORK — The United Nations has announced fresh humanitarian funding to support flood survivors in Pakistan, warning that more resources are urgently needed as the crisis deepens.
The new allocation adds to the $600,000 already released by the UN’s Asia-Pacific Regional Fund and another $250,000 from Pakistan’s Country-Based Pooled Fund earmarked for local NGOs.
“These funds will support cash transfers, health services, water and sanitation, shelter, food, and other urgent needs,” UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said during a daily press briefing in New York. He appealed to the international community for additional funding to tackle the worsening situation.
Dujarric stressed that UN agencies are working closely with the government to reach flood-hit communities. However, access remains difficult as entire villages are still submerged, with floodwaters in some areas rising to 10 meters deep, according to UN reports.
Key needs include sanitation, healthcare, shelter, food, and safe drinking water. Health officials have also warned of a sharp rise in waterborne diseases across several affected districts. OCHA has deployed staff to Punjab to help coordinate relief operations.
“While these new funds will enable life-saving aid, existing resources are nearly exhausted. Urgent additional funding is critically needed,” Dujarric warned.
