President Launches Nationwide Tree Plantation Drive to Combat Climate Change
ISLAMABAD – President Asif Ali Zardari has urged the nation to unite for a greener and climate-resilient Pakistan, stressing the urgent need for large-scale tree plantation amid the growing threat of floods, cloudbursts, and rising temperatures.
In a message on the launch of the Monsoon Tree Plantation Campaign on August 18, the president said that planting trees was not merely symbolic but a vital step to protect livelihoods, restore ecosystems, and safeguard future generations.
“This is not simply about planting trees; it is about creating healthier communities, protecting livelihoods, and ensuring a climate-resilient future,” the President’s Secretariat quoted him as saying.
The campaign, running from August to October, aims to plant more than 41 million saplings across the country. The president said the drive would cover cities, villages, schools, and government institutions, reshaping landscapes and strengthening defenses against climate disasters.
Calling it a collective responsibility, he urged the youth to lead as “ambassadors of change,” while asking the media, farmers, civil society, and religious scholars to play their role in motivating people to join the effort.
Highlighting Pakistan’s environmental challenges, the president noted that deforestation, rising heatwaves, and recurring floods were threatening millions of lives. With insufficient forest cover leaving the land vulnerable, he stressed that tree plantation was essential for the country’s survival.
“Trees are the lifeline of the environment. They clean the air, regulate the climate, conserve water, enrich soil, and shield us from disasters like floods and landslides,” he said, adding that each sapling planted today was an investment in a safer, greener tomorrow.
